Cheap Healthy Foods – Watch Your Weight and Your Budget

Many of us are looking at our grocery bill for the first time. If you are like me, you buy what you need without paying too much attention to the cost of the item. Today, we are looking at ways to maximize the bang for our grocery dollar. But being frugal doesn’t mean skimping on nutritious food for you and your family.

Here is list of the top 5 nutritious food items you can get for less than $3 dollars:

  1. Frozen Vegetables – I love frozen vegetables, they are picked in season and have the same amount of nutrients as the fresh ones. The advantage is that you do not have to wait for the season to eat them. In addition to being nutrient rich, they also have high fiber. They can be used in soups, stews and stir-frr.
  2. Canned Salmon – For women in their reproductive years, Salmon is much better option than Tuna due its lower mercury levels. I also think it is little more upscale than tuna and can be easily added to salads and pastas. All the parts included in the can – skin and bones are all edible. The Salmon bones are great source of Calcium.
  3. Brown Rice – We all know brown rice has high levels of fiber, but they are also high in E vitamin. They take 45 minutes to cook so cook in a large batch, and freeze them. A small bag of brown rice usually has 19 individual servings and cost less than $3.
  4. Edamame – These have great heart health benefits of Soy, they are also high in protein and fiber. They are extremely easy to cook – just boil them for 6 minutes. Use them in Soups, stews and dips. Great food for kids and can be eaten hot or cold.
  5. Sweet Potato – Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet vegetables that kids love and great for baby food. Sweet potatoes contain large amounts of vitamin A and fiber. Very high source of beta Carotene which is good for our eyes.

Vegetarian Paella

Recipe Submitted by Jane Rollins, Orlando FL

Ingredients

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1 small green bell pepper, chopped
1 small yellow bell pepper, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup uncooked Valencia or other medium-grain rice
¼ teaspoon saffron strands, crushed
1 14-ounce can diced tomatoes, drained
1 cup frozen lima beans
2 cups vegetable broth
1 cup frozen peas
Lemon wedges for garnish

Directions

Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add onions and bell peppers and cook for 3 minutes; add garlic and cook 1 minute, until fragrant. Add rice and saffron and continue to cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute more. Stir in tomatoes and lima beans and cook for 1 minute more.

Add broth and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes and reduce heat to simmer.

Cover and cook for 10 minutes. If needed, add ¼ to ½ cup water or vegetable stock to prevent rice from sticking, then cover and cook another 5 minutes.

Stir in peas and cook until just tender and liquid is absorbed, about 4 minutes. Avoid overcooking; the rice should be just slightly al dente. (If not tender enough, add a bit more water and continue cooking.)

Serve garnished with lemon wedges.

Simple & Healthy Recipe Substitutions

  • Substitute brown rice to increase your fiber intake, as well as several vitamins and minerals. (Additional cooking time and water required.)
  • Use low-sodium canned tomatoes and rinse before use.
  • Substitute ½ to 1 teaspoon turmeric and/or ½ to 1 teaspoon cumin for saffron to reduce cost and increase anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Substitute frozen shelled edamame beans for lima beans to add soy protein.

12 tips to a Healthier Marriage

Building a Healthy Foundation

  • Take responsibility for your own joy. Your partner should bring light to your life, but it is unfair and unrealistic to expect him or her to provide your happiness.
  • Always show respect and acknowledge often what you love about your partner.
  • Resolve problems together. Open communication and creative solutions will strengthen your relationship.
  • Get help early on. The average married couple waits six years before seeking help for conflict. Reach out before problems seem insurmountable.

Fighting Fair

  • Be honest, but avoid criticism and belittling behaviors. Don’t judge, insult, blame or roll your eyes. Recognize differences, discuss disagreements and be willing to compromise.
  • Don’t suppress your feelings to avoid conflict. Research shows that those who stay quiet during marital arguments are at higher risk of depression and illness.
  • Listen without defensiveness. Consider how you can improve yourself rather than focusing on your partner’s mistakes.
  • Leave the past behind. Don’t repeatedly bring up past hurts and conflicts.  When you are hysterical don’t get historical.

Fostering Affection

  • Recognize each other’s contributions. Thank your partner; don’t assume that certain household responsibilities are his or her “job.” If the distribution of responsibilities feels uneven, record the chores you each complete. Then switch tasks for a month to better understand each other’s contributions.
  • Laugh and play together.
  • Take some solo time to reflect when conflicts push you apart. Then, with your partner, look for common ground and practice forgiveness.
  • Never take your partner for granted

How many ways are there to lose weight? The answer to that question depends on who you ask. If you ask me, I think there are two ways to lose weight (at least, to lose it permanently and safely): eat less and move more. Do You Need A Reason To Quit Smoking

All smokers are aware that smoking is injurious to health. Yet, many continue to smoke even when they know that this habit actually kills. Is that not enough a reason to quit smoking? Of course, there are many, many other reasons – but this one is the most critical, i.e. your life. Smoking is such an irony – you pay money to buy yourself a slow and extremely painful (not to mention expensive) death.

Stop Smoking – Today – Why?

If you look for one reason to quit smoking, you will find many. Some are very well known and some not so popular. Check out the following list and get motivated to stop this habit before it stops your life.

  1. Prevent lung cancer – more than 80 percent of smokers would suffer from some or other respiratory related diseases; a very high percentage of this number would be of cancer; lung cancer. This is a horrendous, tortuously slow and extremely painful death. You would literally suffocate over 6-36 months dying a lingering death that you would not wish on your worst enemy. Don’t you think this is an excellent reason to quit smoking?
  2. Repair your looks – did you know that smoking is ‘stealing’ oxygen from your blood? The under-oxygenated blood in turn affects most of the organs in the body – negatively. One of the organs thus attacked and very obvious to the naked eye, is the skin. The skin of a smoker would have an unhealthy pallor and would suffer from dryness. Very often the skin would look like parchment paper and it is easily wrinkled at a very young age. A good reason to quit smoking is hence, to look better and prevent premature wrinkling of your skin.
  3. Protecting those who live around you – these obviously would be your family and friends. A good number of reports point to the fact that passive smoking is much more harmful than smoking itself. In this case you would be guilty of poisoning your children, spouse, parents and friends. Is that not a sufficient reason to quit smoking?
  4. You do not smell so terrible – a smoker smells of cigarettes; all the time. No matter what deodorant you use, you would still smell of cigarette smoke. It is often that your breath too, would be invaded by this smell, which is definitely not at all pleasant. Are you still searching for a reason to quit smoking?
